Maya Waked's "Shou Ada Ma Bada": A Satirical Take on the Cost of Living
Maya Waked Releases "Shou Ada Ma Bada": A Satirical Anthem on the Cost of Living with a Playful Twist

In contemporary society, there is a pronounced surge in expenditure, reflecting a complex interplay of factors such as rising living costs, evolving consumer habits, and an increased demand for conveniences and luxuries.

"Shou Ada Ma Bada" offers a refreshing, satirical spin on a universal struggle. Whether in Dubai, Beirut, or any modern city, the song captures the absurdity of rising expenses with humor and relatability.

"The relevancy of this theme inspired the release and led me to approach it with satire to offer some humor on an absurd situation, to an audience who can sympathize," the Lebanese-Canadian artist explains.

A Tribute to Ziad Rahbani & a Unique Visual Concept

What makes this project even more special is its deep-rooted influence from Lebanese composer Ziad Rahbani. Maya has long admired Rahbani’s wit and musical style, making this song a personal milestone.

"I've always wanted to record and release a song composed by Lebanese composer Ziad Rahbani as his style and wit have influenced me for years," she shares.

To complement the song’s sharp and playful lyrics, the music video takes a literal yet imaginative approach. A restaurant serving gold and diamonds instead of food humorously illustrates the lyric, "we need to sell our jewellery to pay the lunch bill." The exaggerated visuals amplify the song’s message, making the satire even more striking.

Facing Life’s Challenges with Humor

Beyond its entertaining elements, "Shou Ada Ma Bada" carries a deeper message—finding joy and resilience through humor, even in tough times.

"The song is an invitation to face all challenges of life, whether financial or psychological, with sarcasm and self-deprecation...

...I want to convey that anyone can navigate bitterness with a sharp sense of humor even in the darkest of times," shares Maya.

This blend of bittersweet storytelling and upbeat melodies has resonated with listeners, reinforcing the power of music to bring both laughter and comfort.

A Vision Brought to Life by Mia Chaar

The collaboration with director Mia Chaar played a key role in shaping the song’s visual identity. From the beginning, Chaar’s vision captivated the artist, blending bold storytelling with a lighthearted tone.

"Mia Chaar is a young, talented director, and her vision for the music video captivated me from the start...

...Her ideas to create a bold and poignant storyboard while staying true to the song's light-hearted tone proved that the depth of ‘Shou Ada Ma Bada’ spoke to her."

On set, her clear direction and infectious enthusiasm made the process seamless, ensuring the entire cast and crew remained engaged and inspired.

The Joy of Creation: Favorite Moments

Among all aspects of the production, recording the vocals remained a personal highlight for Maya.

"Recording the vocals of a song is always a favorite part of my creative process, and ‘Shou Ada Ma Bada’ was no different."

Filming the video was another unforgettable experience, thanks to the positive energy of the team at Hana Road Production. Maya reflects on the emotional moment of seeing the final product come together:

"Seeing all the pieces strung together in post-production was very emotional, and I believe the finished product reflects how much fun and passion went into making it together."

A Playful Yet Powerful Musical Statement

With "Shou Ada Ma Bada", Maya Waked masterfully blends humor, social commentary, and musical craftsmanship to create a song that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Through a striking visual concept, a playful yet profound message, and a team that brought it to life with passion, the song is proof as to how music can make even life's struggles a little more bearable—with a touch of wit and satire.
