Shébani has been blazing trails in the Dubai music scene since 2016 and has come a long way. By the time this interview is published, her latest single 'Higher' would have been out. Another remarkable feat for an artist her caliber. Coming from an artistic family ― both parents are authors ― Sarah ultimately dreams of performing at Madison Square Garden. Armed with dedication, passion and self-belief, achieving such a goal is never far-fetched.

What and who inspires you?

Stories inspire me. Life itself inspires me. I'm a storyteller. I studied scriptwriting and storytelling in university and songwriting not too long after that. So I've constantly felt inspired by books, poetry, movies, as well as my own stories and life experiences.

Human emotions are really interesting to me, I find that we're a lot more complex than we like to seem. There's a depth in life and the human mind that I love to explore and write about. So you can only imagine the times I've explored my own mind and emotions. I think if I wasn't writing everything down into songs or journals, I'd probably go crazy!

What was the very first song you've ever written? What was it about?

'Breathe A Little. It actually made it to my first EP released in 2016 'Alter Ego'. The song was about the anxiety, fear and self-doubt you experience when you're on the brink of going all-in and pursuing your passion. Pretty much everything in your body will fight that urge and stop you from going for it. You'll find the smallest excuse to not go for it. But all you got to do is just take a deep breath, move one foot at a time, and suddenly you're in way too deep that you can't find your way back! The only way out is through! So go for it, explore and follow that dream of yours. It's worth it. You just have to give in to be honest.

Higher. What's the song story?

'Higher' discusses the freedom and liberation you experience once you accept your own company, and find that sacred space while being on your own. I wrote the song in my room, it didn't have furniture at the time, and I was laying on the floor with some music playing in the background. And at that moment, everything seemed to be calm and quiet. I felt like I was elevated somehow! I guess! It's most likely the last single I'll be releasing for now. I'm taking a musical hiatus! Not from music. But to write new music. That's all I'll say for now!

What part of the song process did you enjoy the most?

My favorite part would have to be writing the lyrics and composing the melodies. There's a different kind of high that comes with it! Very liberating. Also, I am currently learning my way around song production.
