A Harmonious Journey of Passion and Perseverance (Photos by: Patrick Mecherkany)

The journey of an artist often mirrors the intricate storytelling found in classic literature.

Much like Odysseus in The Odyssey, navigating trials and tribulations to reach his destined path, Alain Mékani has carved his own course through dedication, resilience, and a profound connection to his craft. His debut single, Fool, stands as an exemplification of years of perseverance, embodying both personal and artistic growth.

Mékani’s passion for songwriting began at an early age. “I’ve always dreamed of songwriting,” he recalls. “If you check my notes on my iPhone, you would find so many songs that I always had melodies for.” However, financial constraints delayed the realization of this dream. It took years of learning, experimenting with melodies, and ultimately achieving financial independence before he could bring his music to life. “Having my own job, house, and car gave me the power to start producing the ideas that little Alain had in his mind.”

His music is deeply personal, often drawing from themes of loss, heartbreak, and introspection.

“My music comes from heartbreak, deception, and being disappointed in people,”

he explains—memento mori—resonates strongly with him, particularly following the passing of his father in 2015. This event became a pivotal moment in his artistic evolution. His song If Only You Were Here was initially composed in memory of his father, yet its universal message allows listeners to interpret it in their own way.

Navigating the industry as an independent artist has posed challenges, yet Mékani embraces the path with determination.

“Many big artists started out independently. When someone has talent and passion, they can make it,” he states.

However, forging connections and mastering the nuances of production were not without difficulties. He acknowledges his initial struggles with social anxiety but emphasizes the importance of overcoming fear. “I used to struggle with reaching out to producers, musicians, or collaborators. But once I pushed past that fear, everything changed.” Per aspera ad astra—through hardships to the stars—perfectly encapsulates his journey.

Cultural heritage plays a significant role in Mékani’s artistic identity. Growing up in Beirut before relocating to Dubai, he embraces the rich influences of both cities. “Lebanon influenced my writing style—melancholic, reflective, and emotionally charged. I come from a multilingual household, so I incorporate English, Arabic, and French into my music.” His upcoming projects will further explore these cultural elements, offering a deeper reflection of his roots.

His latest release, Hold, delves into the emotional turbulence of a toxic relationship. “I wrote this song when I was caught in a toxic push-and-pull with someone I just couldn’t quit,” he shares. “I kept telling myself I’d never go back, but whenever they held me the right way, I felt my resolve slip. The rush of surrender was intoxicating, even though I knew it would break me all over again.” Produced by Bailouni, the track features a unique technique called ‘split brain,’ which separates languages between different earbuds or panning, creating an immersive and dynamic listening experience.

Beyond music, Mékani’s background in marketing and branding has enhanced his artistic expression. “Visual elements are crucial. Even if someone doesn’t connect with the music immediately, they might remember the aesthetic, the album cover, or a certain color palette.” His strategic approach to music promotion ensures that his work resonates both audibly and visually.

Mental health advocacy remains a fundamental aspect of his public presence. Diagnosed with agoraphobia, panic disorder, and DPDR, he is vocal about 'destigmatizing' mental health discussions.

“Taking medication for mental health is just like taking a painkiller for a headache—there’s no shame in it.”

Through his platform, he seeks to foster a sense of understanding and support for those facing similar struggles.

Alain Mékani’s journey is an ongoing narrative of growth and authenticity. His music serves as more than just sound—it is a bridge between personal experiences and collective emotions. Just as Odysseus found his way home after years of trials, Mékani continues to forge his path, ensuring that each step is marked by purpose and artistic integrity.
