MALEM

His production process is unique: mood-dependent. "If I'm sitting in front of a drum, it starts from a beat first and a vocal melody improvisation follows quickly." Factor in the creation as an idea from scratch into the production process, the dynamic changes and he can affirm that oftentimes, the melodies come first. From a purely technical perspective in regards to the realization of a song, he usually starts with the beat as a first brick and from there, he already has envisioned and built an exact plan for the song's direction. Come to think of it, he says, all melodies already have a beat when played. But it all boils down to "the silence between the notes." Meet MÂLEM.

Please introduce yourself.

My name is MÂLEM and I produce music for myself and other artists. I was born in Morocco and I'm based in France. I'm the lead singer and musician in two rock bands too.

Please tell us about your music production journey.

First of all, I'm an autodidact, I learned to play guitar by myself and started to compose my very first melodies, and it's from there that I used to record my ideas on a phone. By dint of work and passion, I gained experience in MAO and recording live music.

What got you into music production? What was that moment when you said "This is something I want to do as a career?"

I have always been drawn to the idea of creating songs. So I get into music production naturally. The magic which made me make the decision operated when I discovered the band Queen and its singer Freddie Mercury.

THE SCOTCHTAPE:

Afro-rock band with very heady gimmicks. Everything is composed and played first in real-time on jam, then I do the real and the prod in a second time. It's composed of 5 members.

FUSION:

4 member-band composed of a bass, a guitar, a drum, and a singer. Funk oriented.

Biggest lesson learned in music production.

We can do many things with hardware and software, but nothing can replace human beings. The idea is to make it simple. The most important thing is the first record that we work with. The challenge is to catch a real emotion. Musicians have to be comfortable and in good communication and don't have to think too much. The first take is usually the best.

The first take is usually the best.

Would you consider yourself a morning person?

Definitively not, I like to work by night. But it happens to start a record session in the morning sometimes.

Among the big names who would like to work with?

Red One Timbaland Lady Gaga
