Go For It!

UK native professional singer, radio-presenter and vocal coach Jasmine Taylor began teaching performing arts to kids back in 2012 in the UK until she moved to the UAE in 2015. "When I arrived here the gig life just pretty much took over and I was performing sometimes up to 8 times a week and even singing 9 hours a day at times," she said. Jasmine admits to bad singing habits which eventually took a toll on her vocal cords: losing her voice completely. Her doctor advised her to quit singing. "Naturally, that was not an option in my eyes so I put myself in my very own vocal boot camp and began to learn as much as I possibly could about the voice and how to use it correctly."

This journey she ventured on allowed her to help others as well. "I get so much out of teaching and seeing people light up when they get it right." Jasmine believes it is "the most rewarding feeling" and it has become so much more than just vocal coaching. "I really feel that I am making a difference in people's lives and confidence. That is a blessing."

You seem like a busy person with radio vocal coaching and others. How do you balance life and work?

I won't lie, that can be really tough at times and I am still learning how to do that. It is a practice for sure and I am getting better at it daily. I think the key is routine and organisation but life isn't always as easy as that so I am just trying to make more quality time for myself off the clock and do my best to keep up with friends and family.

Who do you look up to outside of the music space?

Hmmm, well if we are talking on a celeb basis then I would say Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith & Dwayne Johnson but on a personal level, my parents!

Do you consider yourself a morning person?

I think I speak for all musicians when I say… Hell to the No!! Haha! Our work life is based mostly around nightlife so that tends to be when the creativity flows too I think. But I have got a lot better in the last year. I wake up in the AM instead of the PM these days.

Most memorable experience being a radio presenter.

My first show for sure (laughs). The first time was so fun and exciting but also very mentally challenging and you start to doubt yourself. I had to overcome self-sabotage and really push myself and I remember feeling so proud of myself at the end. I love new challenges and love to learn so I am pushing myself to grow all the time. It has been a really great experience so far.

What do you think is missing in the Dubai music scene?

It would be nice if there was a legit record label here and we are working on at The BarCoe Studio ;) I think in terms of the music community things are getting better here and we are coming together more but there is also a lot of shade too so it would be nice if everyone could just support each other.

Start small, earn big

What is your message to aspiring vocal coaches and radio presenters?

Don't let fear or self-doubt hold you back from walking in your path. If there is something you want to do then learn, create, put your insecurities to one side and just GO FOR IT! My favourite thing to say is "Do something today that your future self will thank you for tomorrow!" Also, "Start small, earn big". I should trademark these haha.
