With a more positive outlook and perspective in life in general albeit music, Teesside-based singer/songwriter Esmae admits she's "much better" now that the world is finally coming out of the global pandemic! "The one good thing about lockdown for me has meant I've been able to refine my songwriting, spend time in the studio and prepare for the release of my music."
musivv.com’s digital magazine dedicated artists outside of Dubai and the UAE.
“I would like to see more opportunities for independent artists to be able to get in front of the decision-makers and have more access to national radio play and playlisting. Writing and producing the music is one thing but trying to get it out there quite a minefield.
The UK native songstress used this opportunity to practice and progress as an artist ever ready for the one sweet day when things do open up. "There’s no doubt that the pandemic has been tough on everyone, including musicians and all performers, with no live venues and the opportunity to generate income being taken away it’s meant many have had to explore other avenues." She remains optimistic. And with the release of her first official song 'Ought To Know' the future is bright.
Who is Esmae?
I've been writing songs for a couple of years now and they've had success on platforms such as Soundcloud and YouTube. 'OUGHTA KNOW' is my first official release - so it's kind of like my baby in a way! My songs are all based on either my life experiences or the experiences of people I know which essentially uncovers a whole range of human emotions and certainly makes the writing process interesting, to say the least. I honestly don't think I’ll ever be renowned for love songs.
What's the inspiration behind 'Oughta Know'?
That’s such a good question. ‘Ought To Know’ is literally open to the listeners' interpretation. So many people think it’s about being cheated on but it is literally about constantly finding yourself in the same negative situation you’ve been in a million times and thinking I really oughta know better than this... with the hope that you’ll eventually gain the insight you need to find your own self worth and place value on yourself. Whatever the reason, the person - whoever or wherever it is maybe isn't getting what they need out of a one-sided relationship and they 'should've known better?'

Insight is key in these situations so I'll leave that to the listener.
What do you think is missing in the independent music scene/industry in the UK?
I would like to see more opportunities for independent artists to be able to get in front of the decision-makers and have more access to national radio play and playlisting. Writing and producing the music is one thing but trying to get it out there quite a minefield.
Do you consider yourself a procrastinator?
Normally, my initial response would be absolutely not. However, with the pandemics shutting everything down it has forced me to stand still and refocus all my energy on my music. It’s also afforded me the luxury of time and the opportunity to work on my writing and plan the direction I’d like to go in as an artist.
Hopefully once the venues re-open I’ll be more ready than ever to perform.
Outside of music, what gives you a sense of escape from the noise of day-to-day life?
That’s a tough one as my main enjoyment comes from listening to all types of music and absorbing the lyrics. Second to that I would say swimming is my next favourite pastime as I love being in the water - there’s no noise there for sure!

If you were in a lift with your music idol, what would you tell him?
I’d definitely thank them for always inspiring me and let them know how much their lyrics have helped me through some of the most challenging aspects of my life and some of the best ones too.
People, travel, life and all the ups-and-downs it brings [inspire me to make music]! You never really know when the next song idea might come because you never really know what’s around the corner - that both petrifies and excites me all at the same time!Follow Esmae:
